The Council for Economic Education

The Council for Economic Education is an organization dedicated to providing K-12 financial education resources. These lesson plans from CEE are aligned with the National Standards for Financial Literacy.

Newspaper and Internet listings of stock prices provide important information for investors. Gathering and understanding information found in the stock listings is an important life skill, and also a useful skill for students participating in stock market simulations. This lesson introduces information typically found in stock listings, focusing on the basic elements.

The students play roles in a simulation activity designed to show how bank loans made to individuals can have an impact on others in the community. Then, working in small groups, the students analyze other hypothetical loans, using flow charts or other diagrams to describe the probable impact of each.

The students look at a simple chart relating education level with average annual income. From the data the students generalize that people with more education usually earn more income. They learn that human capital refers to the knowledge, skills, talent, health, values and experience that people bring to the workplace. Working in small groups, the students receive information about the budgets of various families whose members have different levels of education. They learn about fixed and variable expenses and note that level of education can affect people’s standard of living.

Lesson 2: Invest in Yourself

The students work in two groups and participate in a mathematics game to explore the concept that people invest in themselves through education. The game helps students recognize that improved human capital allows people to produce more in a given amount of time and learn about the connections among investment in human capital, careers and earning potential.
